About Ashwagandha Root

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the best-known herbs used in Ayurvedic tradition. The root has historically been prepared in teas, powders, tonics, and other botanical preparations as part of general wellness routines.

Modern research has focused mainly on ashwagandha extracts and supplements, especially for stress and sleep. NIH notes that some studies suggest potential benefits for stress and sleep, but research remains limited and results vary by preparation and dose.

🌿 Flavor: Earthy, robust, slightly bitter

🌱 Traditional Uses

Ashwagandha has a long history in Ayurveda, where it has traditionally been used as a general restorative or rejuvenating herb and incorporated into preparations intended to promote vitality and overall well-being.

Traditionally enjoyed as part of wellness routines associated with:

Relaxation • Rest • Vitality • Resilience • General Well-Being

These are descriptions of traditional herbal use and should not be interpreted as claims that ashwagandha treats or prevents disease.

🌿 Modern Wellness Interest

Current scientific research has examined ashwagandha for several areas of wellness. NIH reports that some clinical studies suggest certain ashwagandha preparations may help reduce perceived stress and may modestly improve some aspects of sleep; however, studies have generally used standardized extracts rather than loose-root tea.

For that reason, Queen Tee’s should avoid implying that a cup of loose-root tea will produce the same effects seen in clinical studies using concentrated extracts.

☕ How to Prepare

Because ashwagandha is a root, gently simmering it works better than a quick steep.

Traditional Root Tea / Decoction

1. Add approximately 1 teaspoon of loose ashwagandha root to 8–10 oz of water.
2. Bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat, cover, and gently simmer for 10–15 minutes.
4. Strain thoroughly.
5. Enjoy warm.

For a stronger, fuller cup, simmer for up to 20 minutes.

Make It Your Way

Its earthy flavor pairs nicely with:

Cinnamon • Ginger • Honey • Cardamom • Milk or Plant-Based Milk

⚠️ Important Safety Information

Ashwagandha can cause drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhea, or vomiting in some people. Rare cases of liver injury have also been reported in people taking ashwagandha products.

Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy and should generally be avoided while breastfeeding because adequate safety information is lacking.

Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have a thyroid or autoimmune disorder
  • Have liver problems
  • Are preparing for surgery
  • Take medication for blood pressure or diabetes
  • Take thyroid medication
  • Take sedatives or anti-seizure medication
  • Take medications that suppress the immune system

NCCIH notes that ashwagandha may interact with these medication categories.
