Loose-Leaf Brewing Guide

Loose-Leaf Brewing Guide

Welcome to Queen Tee's brewing guide — your starting point for preparing a nourishing cup of herbal tea. Because every herb is unique and every palate is different, these are general guidelines, not strict rules. Feel free to adjust quantities and steep times to find what works best for you.

General Starting Points by Herb Type

Herbal teas don't follow one universal ratio. Leaf density, cut size, and your preferred strength all play a role. The suggestions below are a comfortable starting place — always taste and adjust.

🌿 Leaves & Grasses

Examples: peppermint, lemon balm, nettle, oat straw

  • Suggested amount: 1–2 teaspoons per 8 oz of water (leaves tend to be light and fluffy — you may need a bit more by volume)
  • Hot brew: Pour near-boiling water (195–205°F / 90–96°C) over the leaves. Steep 5–10 minutes, covered.
  • Cold brew: Use 1–2 tablespoons per 8 oz of cold water. Steep covered in the refrigerator for 4–8 hours.

🌸 Flowers

Examples: Queen Tee's Premium Hibiscus Loose Leaf Tea, chamomile, elderflower, lavender

  • Suggested amount: 1–2 teaspoons per 8 oz. Flowers are delicate and aromatic — start lighter and increase to taste.
  • Hot brew: Use water around 190–200°F (87–93°C). Steep 5–7 minutes. Avoid over-steeping, which can turn the flavor bitter or sharp.
  • Cold brew: Use 1–2 tablespoons per 8 oz of cold water. Refrigerate 6–12 hours for a vibrant, refreshing infusion.

🪨 Roots & Barks

Examples: Osha Root, dandelion root, burdock, ginger

  • Suggested amount: 1 teaspoon per 8 oz as a starting point. Roots are dense and potent — a little often goes a long way.
  • Hot brew (decoction method): Add roots to cold water, then bring to a gentle simmer for 15–20 minutes. This draws out deeper compounds from woody plant material. Strain and enjoy.
  • Cold brew: Roots can be cold-brewed, though the flavor extraction is more subtle. Use 1–2 teaspoons per 8 oz and steep refrigerated for 8–12 hours.

Please note: Some roots and herbs are potent. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications, consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.

🌺 Mixed Blends

Examples: herbal blends combining flowers, leaves, and/or roots

  • Suggested amount: 1–2 teaspoons per 8 oz is a reliable starting point for most blends. Adjust based on the dominant herb types in the mix.
  • Hot brew: Use water around 195–205°F (90–96°C). Steep 7–10 minutes. If the blend contains roots, extend to 10–15 minutes or use a brief simmer.
  • Cold brew: Use 1–2 tablespoons per 8 oz of cold water. Refrigerate 6–12 hours. Blends often taste especially bright and smooth cold-brewed.

Hot vs. Cold Preparation at a Glance

Method Water Temperature Steep Time Best For
Hot Infusion 190–205°F (87–96°C) 5–15 min (roots longer) Leaves, flowers, blends
Hot Decoction Simmering (not boiling) 15–25 min Roots & barks
Cold Brew Cold / room temp 4–12 hours (fridge) All types — especially flowers & blends

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Cover while steeping to keep volatile aromatic compounds from escaping with the steam.
  • Start with less, adjust up. You can always add more herb next time — over-steeping or over-measuring can produce a bitter or overwhelming cup.
  • Leaf density matters. Fluffy herbs like flowers and cut leaves take up more space but may weigh less than compact roots. Trust your taste buds more than exact measurements.
  • Sweeteners & add-ins. Raw honey (added after cooling slightly), lemon juice, or a splash of apple cider vinegar can complement many herbal teas beautifully.
